Hello Listeners,

Today is February 23, and this is A Garden A Day with Mædunbroc Gardens.

Thank you for listening.

Today’s garden is no stranger to the Guinness Book of World Records.  With more than 150 million blooms, this garden is the world’s largest flower garden.  So where are we?  Today, we are exploring Dubai Miracle Garden in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Located in the Dubailand area of the city — a planned area of theme parks and attractions, the Dubai Miracle Garden opened to the public on Valentine’s Day 2013.

The garden spans almost forty-seven acres, which of course is not the largest garden in the world by area.  Dubai Miracle Garden won its record as largest flower garden due to the number of blooms found in the garden — 150 million blooms and 250 million plants.

But that’s not the only record the garden holds.  Dubai Miracle Garden includes the tallest topiary sculpture AND has the biggest flower structure in the world AND also has the longest flower wall in the world.

The tallest topiary structure stands about fifty-nine feet tall, and it’s someone you will immediately recognize — Mickey Mouse!  As part of their Disney Avenue, the garden installed nine topiaries of Disney characters — Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck, Daisy, Huey, Dewey, and Louie.  The topiary of Goofy was installed after the garden became a record holder, and Goofy might actually be taller than Mickey — which I guess would get them ANOTHER world record.

The biggest flower structure in the world is the Emirates Airbus A380.  The Emirates airline boasts more Airbuses than any ofter airline, and Dubai Miracle Garden decided to honor this impressive plane with an even more impressive floral sculpture.  The airplane is covered in more than 500,000 fresh flowers and is the largest attraction in the garden.

The garden is circular in shape and is enclosed by a wall.  That wall gives the garden another world record as the longest flower wall.  The wall is more than 2600 feet long and is covered with many different flowers  — almost 22 million in fact — including petunias, coleus, and marigolds.

Other attractions in the garden include a heart-shaped arched tunnel, a teddy bear topiary that rivals old Mickey in height, a forty-nine foot wide floral clock, and of course, no fairy tale destination can be complete without a floral castle.

The latest addition to Dubai Miracle Garden is Smurfs Village.  The little blue guys — and gal, we can’t forget Smurfette — arrived at the garden for the open of this season.  But — as nothing in this garden is small — expect to find these Smurfs larger than life.

Practically every surface of this garden, aside from the walking paths, is covered in blooms.

The garden is called the miracle garden for a reason.  Located in the hot desert, the garden needs more care than is typical in a garden of this type.  To provide the water that a garden of this size needs, the garden is watered at night to minimize evaporation, and the garden uses reclaimed water — basically recycled wastewater — that is filtered before use in the garden.

Next door to the garden is the Dubai Butterfly Garden — the world’s largest indoor butterfly sanctuary.  The Butterfly Garden is home to more than more than 15,000 butterflies from twenty-six species.  Entry to the Butterfly Garden does require a separate ticket.

The Dubai Miracle Garden opens for the cooler winter months, usually in October and closes in May.  The prettiest blooms are between November and March.

There are more than thirty food options in the garden, and outside food is prohibited.  It’s hot in Dubai — even in winter — so plan accordingly.

Well, that’s about it for today.  I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s garden.

Thank you so much for listening.  Join me tomorrow to find out where we are going next.  I release a new episode every single day.
