Before you go, why don’t you listen to today’s episode to learn more about the garden as we explore Myriad Botanical Gardens and Crystal Bridge Conservatory in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Hello Listeners,

Today is March 17, and this is A Garden a Day with Mædunbroc Gardens.  Thank you for listening.

The fifteen acre oasis known as Myriad Botanical Garden in the heart of Oklahoma City features ornamental gardens and clean green space with the express mission of improving the quality of life for city dwellers and visitors.

The botanical garden includes a children’s area with a vintage carousel and in winter hosts an outdoor ice skating rink.  The garden hosts a number of events throughout the year including a full-day gardening school in March, gardening and craft workshops for children, guided walking tours, art classes for adults, and several festivals including today’s Sham Rock the Gardens.

Tulip Mania is also going on now in the garden and runs through April 8.  The show features works from thirty-two artists.

The Myriad Botanical Garden began as part of an urban renewal plan in the late 1960s.  A decade of planning resulted in a ceremonial groundbreaking in 1977 with construction of the infrastructure go the garden lasting for four years.

In 1981, fundraising plans began for a conservatory.  Construction of the conservatory began in 1983 and lasted two years.

In 1987, the city parks and rec department took over the management of the garden, and it was finally ready for its debut on March 25, 1988.

The garden and conservatory have recently received a facelift with the new and improved conservatory opening in 2022.

Outside in the garden grounds, visitors will enjoy shade gardens with seasonal blooms, a great lawn perfect for picnics, a water garden with splash pad for children, walking and jogging trails, and an off-leash dog park.

The conservatory includes a stunning waterfall cascading down a rock facade with tropical plants adorning the rock face.

Water lilies are the focus of the reflecting pool in the conservatory and bromeliads add a pop of red color to the green, lush foliage throughout.

An art gallery and classroom space are also part of the conservatory.

The garden is home to several significant art pieces.  “Gateway” is a fourteen-foot abstract sculpture meant to connect the organic forms of nature to the urban architecture.  A bronze sculpture of two prairie dogs called “Friendship” is located in the children’s garden.  Several other sculptures enhance the garden environment.

In April, the garden hosts its annual Plant-a-Prairie plant sale.  On offer will be plants and seed mixes native to Oklahoma.  In May, the garden will host the annual Oklahoma City Flower and Garden Festival.

The garden is also available to rent and is especially popular for weddings.

Guided and self-guided group tours are available, and there are special tours available for school groups.

The conservatory is open from 9:00 to 5:00 Monday through Saturday and 11:00 to 5:00 on Sunday.  The garden grounds are open daily from 6:00am to 11:00pm.

The garden is free and open to the public.

Well, that’s about it for today’s garden visit.

Thank you for listening.  I do hope you’ve enjoyed today’s episode.

As a reminder, we explore a new garden every single day.
